The Scottish Daily Mail reports today at two primary school pupils were among dozens of people referred to Prevent in Scotland over a 12-month period.

The ‘deeply alarming’ figures show 87 referrals were made to the Prevent ‘de-radicalisation’ scheme in 2022-23. They involved 85 people, as two individuals were referred twice.

Those referred included two primary school children, 21 pupils from secondary schools and six from higher education.

The Scottish figures show police and education bodies made the highest number of Prevent referrals, some two-thirds of the total.

Other referrals came from health bodies, local authorities, prisons, charities, employers and, in one case, a family member.

Police made 31 referrals, the education sector referred 29 people, with 15 referrals from the local authority sector, including 12 from social work and three from housing associations.

Of the 87 Prevent referrals in 2022/23, 44 were deemed suitable for Prevent Case Management, with 43 ‘signposted’ to other services.

Of those, 25 were classified as ‘no further action required’, while 18 were referred onwards for potential further inquiries.

The figures were contained in data released by Police Scotland.
