I was coming from a place of fear and panic, and someone suggested Prevent Watch. I really don’t know where I would be today if I hadn’t gotten that advice.”
I don’t have the words to really explain how grateful I am for the support that the organisation has given me over the three years they were helping me.”

There are approximately 6,000-7,000 Prevent referrals made each year. And the majority of these referrals are of children.
Of these Prevent Watch has supported over 640 to date, in negotiating what is a traumatic and often confusing and untransparent process.
Not only are children disproportionately impacted by being in the education system, which is tasked with Prevent, but Muslims are still EIGHT times more likely to be referred to Prevent than the general population. Prevent Watch supports individuals impacted by Prevent through a free helpline.
Although each case is unique, the lifecycle of each case sees Prevent Watch:
- Record your experiences with your permission. We may use this for media advocacy if you agree, or we may add your case to our research. You may remain anonymous.
- Draft letters to schools, universities, social services, and the police, as well as draft Subject Access Requests or Freedom of Information requests if required.
- Refer you to lawyers who offer free advice. Since Prevent has no legal architecture of its own, we require lawyers to approach each case to see how it may be challenged depending on its nature in relation to established UK law.
- Work with media to advocate on your behalf, if you agree, or publicise your case in a way that feels safe to you and your family.
- Since a case can vary from weeks to months and even years, we can at different stages provide you with information and support, so you know you aren’t alone.
