The Evening Standard: Midwife brings claim against trust after Prevent referral over Palestine posts

A midwife is bringing an employment claim against a hospital trust she worked for after it lodged a Prevent referral over Palestine posts supporting Palestine and criticising Zionism, her lawyers have said. Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust made the referral to the Home Office’s early intervention counter-terrorism programme, along with one to the Nursing and Midwifery Council regulator, a year after Fatimah Mohamied had resigned from her employment and following a complaint about her online activity from UK Lawyers for Israel (UKLFI), according to law firm Leigh Day. The mother-of-two, who lives in London, alleges the referrals breach her rights under the Equality Act 2010 and constitute post-employment harassment and/or discrimination. She said: “I have been subjected to a concerted and targeted effort to intimidate, harass and punish me into silence for my Palestinian advocacy and criticism of Zionism.” Read the full story on Apple News.  Related… “They […]

RSI and Prevent Watch back Springwatch star Chris Packham’s campaign against Prevent profiling

Rights and Security International (RSI) and Prevent Watch back Springwatch star Chris Packham’s campaign to overhaul Ofsted’s approach to autistic people and their referral to the government’s counter-extremism scheme, Prevent. On 10 June, RSI published a series of national Ofsted trainings on Prevent, one of which made uninformed and stereotype-driven assertions about autistic people, claiming that they are more likely to become extremists or terrorists because of their ‘special interests’. Prevent Watch case: Christian autistic boy referred to Prevent counter-terrorism for resisting LGBTQ+ programme The Guardian’s coverage of this story has since sparked significant backlash against Ofsted’s trainings, including by TV presenter Packham, who is also an ambassador for the National Autistic Society, who said: “That’s not safeguarding, that’s an exercise in profiling.” Prevent Watch and RSI welcome this scrutiny. But it must go further. Prevent Watch have seen a spike in the number of individuals, particularly autistic children, being […]

Wonkhe: Palestine Action will shortly count as terrorism

The Westminster government has announced that it intends to proscribe Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation.  In a statement to the House of Commons, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said that Palestine Action had a “long history of unacceptable criminal damage”. She added that the government would not tolerate those who put the UK’s defence enterprise at risk. That was a reference to an incident which involved the group breaking into RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, spray-painting two military planes red – an incident that Cooper called “disgraceful”. The proscription of the group is a significant escalation and has kicked off a major debate about civil liberties – if approved, it will be the first time a direct action group of this sort would be proscribed alongside organisations like ISIS and al-Qaeda. The group, which targets Israeli weapons facilities through property damage and disruption rather than violence against people, would see […]

University reactions to encampments for Palestine can show how Prevent undermines education

Last week, I visited one of the encampments for Palestine happening on university campuses to speak about Prevent and how it is being weaponised to suppress student activism. We sat in the sunshine under the trees, a collection of diverse student societies united in purpose, with integrity and principle. The beautiful simplicity of this was juxtaposed by the ugly presence of Prevent, and the way in which it has complicated, intertwined and imposed itself on this activism and student life. Universities as incubators of positive change The university has always been a space for challenging and changing outdated power structures and ideologies; they have never been about enforcing students to succumb or sustain to a particular system or ideology. In 859 CE, a Tunisian woman named Fatima al-Fihri founded the world’s first University, Al-Qarawiyyin in Fez, Morocco. It was established as a mosque-college and offered studies in politics as well […]

UK Parliament: Call for submissions for Home Affairs Committee inquiry into extremism in the UK

The Home Affairs Committee has announced a new inquiry into new forms of extremism in the UK, with the deadline for submissions in one month. There are widespread concerns that extremism is growing in the UK. Extremism can take many forms. It can lead to violent crimes, radicalisation, incite hatred and at worst lead to acts of terrorism. The inquiry will examine what is driving extremism in the UK today, who is particularly vulnerable to its influence, and what forms extremism now takes. The Committee will also examine the Government’s approach to tackling extremism, including the role of Prevent, and how well it is adapting to new forms it may take. The deadline for written submissions to the inquiry is Wednesday 18 June. Read more on the UK Parliament site. Related… People’s Review of Prevent: A Response to the Shawcross Review (Report, 2024)

TRT World: How the Prevent strategy harms children and surveils Muslims

TRT World’s exclusive documentary reveals how Prevent harms children, through first-ever interviews with a parent and teacher whose lives were deeply impacted by false Prevent referrals. TRT interviews Prevent Watch‘s Dr Layla Aitlhadj, and the author Prof. John Holmwood, an expert witness during the Trojan Horse scandal that saw Prevent forced into schools, and co-author of The People’s Review of Prevent. The 13-minute documentary is well worth watching to understand how Prevent’s presence across the public services in the UK relies upon and deepens stereotypes regarding Muslims in the UK. Meanwhile, the UN has recently called on the UK government to suspend Prevent and compensate its victims. Watch the documentary on YouTube.
