From the classroom to emergency departments and university lecture theatres, Prevent reaches into many parts of society.
The programme was expanded in February 2015 when it became a statutory duty for schools, NHS trusts, prisons and local authorities to report concerns about those at risk of turning to extremism. The change brought accusations that the government was spying, and criminalising specific communities.
